Bart Chat

Greetings,

Before you know it, the Festival will be here, so rest up now. If you haven't checked out the schedule, go to www.videofest.org now! We're very happy with the schedule. In the meantime, we're tracking down some last pieces of equipment (we need a D5 deck), and we need to transfer a few PAL Beta tapes and duplicate the Texas Show. Very importantly, we still need a few volunteers. Please let us know if you can help.

This weekend, I was at the Hot Springs Documentary Festival and I had a great time. I did a workshop on how to make your documentary shorter. While I was there, I got an email on my phone with a proof of the program book, and it looks great. Good writing, good design, and in color! This is the time of year when we're tracking down the filmmakers to get us their notes, so we can build our files for the festival program.

This weekend will be the Guts and Glory event. We have three slots left for people wanting to enter this cool event. This is your chance to go beyond the video race and into the film world. If you're interested or have any questions, let me know at bart@videofest.org.

Hey everybody! The festival is next week. OMG, I can't believe it. Recent developments include:

  • Imedia, the Dallas independent cable network, will be taping a technical-themed fest wrap-up at the Angelika on Nov. 8th, where they will document our new iTunes projection set-up and talk to festers, filmmakers, and staffers. I think it'll be great!

Cool filmmakers coming to town include, but are not limited to:

  • Spencer Haplin, who made the controversial gaming documentary Moral Kombat
  • Chris Strompolos, the producer and star of Raiders of the Lost Ark: the Adaptation
  • Denny Tedesco, who made The Wrecking Crew
  • Jerri Truhill, subject of the documentary film She Should Have Gone to the Moon
  • Bill Dear, the Private Eye detective behind the film O.J. Is Guilty but Not of Murder - one of myfaves!

Go to our website and watch some trailers!

The Guts and Glory competition will be held this Saturday night at the Magnolia Lounge in Fair Park. We have three 16mm slots open. There is still time to register, just send an email to Bart and ask him to include your team.

One gentleman may have a camera and is interested in teaming up with someone who has some experience shooting and loading film. Also we have another team that needs to borrow a light meter - email if you can help. If you want to participate but are holding back because you don't have a camera, email us and maybe we can match you up with a needy team.

I also encourage anyone who wants to attend the Texas Show to arrive early for admission to the very first Dallas Video Festival Awards presentation, which will be offered free with your ticket to the Texas Show, or of course, included in your day pass. We are offering single ticket passes for 11 selected films. For a list of those films, read the section labeled "DETAILS" here.

THANK YOU TO CHUCK JOHNSON WHO DID OUR AWESOME PROGRAM BOOK! Now if we can only print them in time! It's going to be a nail biter. There's tons more that I won't write about here. Check out our blog http://dallasvideofestival.blogspot.com/ which you can get to through the festival website as well.

Shooter-Editor-Writer needed

I have a unique opportunity to produce a minimum 50 projects this year for a client. Each of these projects would consist of shooting, writing and editing a 3-5 minute story, news style.

These projects would be shot NY1 News style, meaning one person will be responsible for all shooting, writing and editing; true one-man band. We would supply all the camera and editing gear. This person would travel to points across the country to produce these stories.

This person would need to have experience with shooting, audio, lighting, editing with FCP, scriptwriting, etc. This person would also need to be organized, be a self starter and be able to excel at customer service and relations.

If you know someone with this experience, please have him/her send me an email with a resume. Demos would be essential.

Thanks!

Extras needed for feature film

Hello all,

I hope this email finds you well and happy. As many of you know, I'm only three production days away from finishing prinicpal photography for my first feature film, HOLD.

I'm shooting a large church scene this Sunday, the 26th, from 9 am to 3 pm. Location is church in South Arlington. Sunday best dress. Will be given hymnals with which to sing songs. Though you will be really singing, please don't worry about how great of a singer you are...The singing will be dubbed over later with a professional choir and so that we have control over the audio of the scene.

Lunch will be provided, as well as snacks. Though there is no pay, you'll be updated about the premiere/festival status, and given an IMDB credit when the film is registered online.

If you are interested, please email me back at :
frank3rdman@hotmail.com and let me know if you DEFINITELY want to go. I have to have a definite answer, so I know how many people to rely on. That way, I can get a number of how many other people I need to pack the church. Even if you aren't interested, please feel free to pass along to people you know. We're looking for ANYONE, of all ages....

When you verify with me, I'll send you the official call sheet with location and times.

Thanks for all that you do. Hope to see many of you on set! :)

Take care,
Frank Mosley

Recently, we’ve had to make some adjustments to the schedule that should be reflected on the Fest website and in the program book. We’re going to show Albert Maysles’s rarely screened film Running Fence, instead of The Gates, which recently played on HBO.

Postcards, posters, and banners have been ordered. Our talented and hard-working graphics designer, Chuck Johnson, is hard at work on the Program Book. We’re barreling towards Fest time and there’s officially no turning back. Yes, we are having a festival. We’ve also launched our Guts and Glory 3 website.

I wanted to mention that we’re very excited to screen a new film, fresh off the Steinbeck, The Color of Money. It’s a riveting, international perspective on American campaign financing. It’s just beginning its international run, and I have it on good authority that once it makes the rounds, it will play a major role regarding how our election financing is perceived by the rest of the world. See it here first, at the Dallas Video Festival.

Bart Chat

Greetings,

It's funny, I remember in years past when it started to get close to fall, I would feel the stress of the festival coming. Then over the years we changed to spring, summer, and winter, and here we are back again. This year will be special because it’s right after the election (hey, you can go and vote now to avoid the lines). I hope we can all celebrate; we have lots of great films about politics and other themes. We need relief from the longest campaign season in the history of the world.

When you go to the site, we have a few things on there that I’ve wanted for so many years; it makes me very happy. If you are surfing on any smart phone, the site will resize it for you automatically, so even at the Fest you can look and see what else is playing. The other cool thing is, as you look over the schedule, you can click on an icon next to the film so that it will show up in your calendar! Wow. We have plenty of trailers on there and you can even see which films people are looking at. If you’re a filmmaker, you can keep going to the site to increase your numbers!

Last weekend, I was at the Austin Film Fest. You can see my blog about it on the Arts and Seek KERA site. And this weekend, I’m headed to the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival to do a workshop on how to make your documentary shorter. Anybody who knows me well knows this is a pet peeve of mine. So that should be interesting. Also, they have a nice selection of docs and hot baths!!

Check it: the Guts and Glory web site is now LIVE: http://24hourvideoracedallas.com/

If you’ve never seen it, this is a unique Dallas Video Fest event and very cool. It’s like a video race but with film, and this year to add to the 16 mm we have super 8. I know you know someone who wants to do this and I know you know someone who has a camera, so check it out.

Did any of you see that friend of the festival, Edie Adams, has passed away? It happened this weekend. The very first program in the very first year of the Fest was Edie showing the work of Ernie Kovacs, the first artist to work in television. I wish I had an open spot in the festival to pay her a tribute. Without her work in preservation, so much of his legacy would have been thrown out in the trash. As a festival director, some of the finest memories you have are those few dinners or backstage conversations with folks you would never have had a chance to meet otherwise. I remember one dinner when on the way out the door the guy sitting at the piano stated to play and Edie just started singing. It was magical. As she would often tell us, yes she did go to Julliard and yes she really could sing. And she also had great comedic timing. Luckily for us, she was also obsessed with keeping the legacy of Kovacs alive. Year after year, she came to talk about him, to show us some rare clips never seen before, and to introduce a new generation to the way he used the medium of TV to be funny. Edie, we thank you for all you have done for us here in Dallas. We will miss you.
